Ottawa Valley Cat Club's Beginning, by Kim Monkhouse

The Ottawa Valley Cat Club is a not for profit group of volunteers that hosts an annual cat show.

It all began with my search for a new cat in late spring 2000. I began surfing the net with the idea to research the Bengal cat. After careful researching, about 6 months later, for my birthday, my husband purchased for me my first purebred cat. A lovely Bengal for pet purposes only. The breeder informed me that she was show quality so I could take her to cat shows if I wished. After getting home with her, I was really proud and wanted to show her off so I began looking into cat shows. I found that almost every cat show here in Canada was way out of my way. There was nothing in Ottawa. So I began looking for any kind of cat clubs or anything in the Ottawa area. Nothing. A few weeks later, I called the Canadian Cat Association and asked how I could start up a cat club. Within a month I had about 6 cat breeders from the Ottawa area interested in forming a cat club with the purpose of bringing more cat shows to the area.

Those breeders and fellow founding members were: Susan Mawby, Judith Braithwaite, Val Griffiths, Julie Lapegna, Bonnie Greer, Diane Campbell, and Sally Jackson.

So in the late Fall of 2000, The Ottawa Valley Cat Club was formed. Sunday, November the 4th 2001 at CFRB Dow's Lake Drill Hall, Ottawa, The Ottawa Valley Cat Club in co-ordination with the Canadian Cat Association held it's first Cat Show in Ottawa since the former Ottawa Cat Club folded a few years prior. We moved our Show to the Nepean Sportsplex Curling rink, and held shows in 2002 through 2006, and then in 2008. We have held our show at the Nepean Sportsplex in Halls A&B from 2009 through 2016. In 2017 the show was moved back to the Curling rink.

If you are a cat-owner, or just share our love for cats, perhaps you would consider joining our club to help support the annual Ottawa Valley Cat Show and our local cat community. Membership forms are available on our Members page.
